The Explora-Dome story

For many years, amature astronomers have been seeking out means of housing their equipment. The structures they use must allow for ease of use of their equipment, while maintaining the careful alignment they have set up. Often times, this means that their structure must have a roof that opens, rolls away, or better yet, a DOME

For many amatures, the dome choice is often not something that can be done, as their prices are very high. Some astronomers with basic construction knowledge have built their own domes out of wood, fiberglass, or whatever other product they can modify to make a crude dome. Someone along the way found an already available product from the farming industry that they could modify into a makeshift dome. This product was a Calf enclosure.

Now we move along to November/December of 2005. A group of ambitious astronomers got together in a popular online forum to discuss different methods of using the "Calf-Dome". Everything from how to operate the shutters, to dome rotation. Somewhere along the line someone decided to call the manufacturer with a proposal for a TRUE dome. After a few emails with the proposal and ideas, the company accepted the challange, and the "Explora-Dome" project was born!

After 2 months of working out minor (and major) issues concerning size, shutter design, ridges, skirt, lip, zenith opening, etc.. the final "Plan" was sent to the manufacturer, and the molds were in the making! This is where the project currently sits on February 14, 2006. The main portion of the molds are now made, with only minor adjustments still needed. The next molds to be made are those of the main and lower shutter.
